Always sit downwind…

So the wife treated us to a little getaway this past weekend. We had a wedding out in Grahamstown and best flight we could get, one of those R400 Kulula deals, meant we needed to stay an extra night and fly back on the Monday…

Well it doesn’t take too much arm twisting to get me into the bush so we headed off to Addo for the night. It’s been at least 10 years since I was there and what I remember is you see a lot of Elephants. Well that did not disappoint but the best sighting was hands down coming across a pride of lions sitting a few meters off the road. Now we’ve had plenty lions sighting, even kills and mating sighting in the past but this one was different. I’m not sure if these guys were hungry, Clare said they looked a little thin but I think it was that they were Eastern Cape Lions… we’re used to the guys up North and not sure you can trust those guys on the coast… ha-ha. At first we pulled up, they seemed chilled but when I wound down my window to snap a few, the large male started paying us a little more attention, a peek through his lazy eye, a sniff… He eventually stood up facing our direction just two meters from us and this is when I started weighing up the odds of Lion vs. Kia Picanto Hire Car. Not an even match but luckily his mate walked off over the road not at all interested in us and like any red-blooded male he followed tail.

So there you have it, always sit downwind, most likely the female isn’t interested in you and hope for an upgrade when hiring a car… it may save your life!
